Sometimes the grinding occurs rapidly in short bursts. My pads still got some life in them, so I'm guessing an ABS problem though neither of my brake lights are on. Secondly, I have a popping/puffing noise coming from my transmission whenever my car is in park or neutral. My local shop said they didn't know how to fix it. My car jerks a tad when I shift to reverse and/or drive but the delay is minimal (within a second.) I'm not too worried about not being able to shift, but I just wanted to see if my transmission's life is almost up. Also, how much would it probably cost to replace a radiator? or an ABS sensor? My neighbor has a 98 Lumina with high miles. I'm trying to convince him to junk the car. HIS problem has to do with the cooling system. We bench tested the fan motors and the fan relays, all are good. So we decided to switch out the temp sensor. When we did, his temp needle would go to full hot when the engine hadn't run more than a minute. There was NO WAY it should do that. AND the fans didn't come on. Thinking it was a bad sensor, we installed a second sensor. Keep in mind, everything plugged up like it was made to, so it wasn't the wrong sensor. Even with the new sensor, he experienced the same thing. We ended up putting the old sensor back in. Still, the fans didn't run. As to the overheating problem, since we were there, we replaced the thermostat, though it was new a year ago; hey! they can go bad. So far we haven't found the problem. Water pump you think? No, that was replaced a year ago too. The reason we were there was because he had a leaking head gasket. No, the gasket wasn't BLOWN, the head was never torqued down. So since we had the timing cover off, we put a new pump and belt in. Makes sense to not have to open up the engine again. We solved the untorqued head problem, but he has always had overheating issues. He's now blowing smoke out the tail pipe. Another problem he had was the battery was always going dead if you didn't start the car every day. We traced it to an electronic door lock problem. He's always replacing light bulbs and his wife STILL gets pulled over for non-operational lights. The car is a big problem. Needless to say, I'm not a Lumina fan. Your grinding noise sounds like a bad wheel bearing. The transmission noise: never heard of such a thing, so I have NO idea. Changing the radiator is easy, and you can do it yourself. You can get a cheap one from a junk yard or spend around a hundred bucks for a new one. Personally, I'd opt for the new one. ABS sensor??? I have no experience with that, and I would opt to have a professional do that. A car that can't go can't hurt you, but a car that can't stop - - -. Get the point? Good luck. :)_
