The tractor will turn over no problem. It has a front mounted distributor. The problem is the tractor has zero spark. The key and everything works and the voltage regulator works as well. Can anyone explain why there is no spark?

A simple automotive electrical system is powered from the battery to trun the starter. This is engaged by the on-off switch which opens and closes the starter relay (.or solenoid). As the engine is cranking the battery supples power to another circuit that is the high voltage circuit. This circuit is generated from electronics (modern vehicles) and prior from a high voltage coil. The coil is really a transformer and has a 100 turns of wire on the +12V side and 1,000 to 10,000 turns on the output side which is connected to the points on the distributor (old system) or controlled by the electronics (modern) using a Hall-effect magentic sensor on the distributor. Once the cam in the distributor turns and the points close or the hall-effect sensor is in the rotational angle, the circuit is complete to allow the high voltage to complete it's path to the spark plug which is connected to the block as ground or +12 volt return. So these are the things to check: 1. Is there spark to the spark plugs? - take one out and lay it on the block and as the engine is turning it should spark. 2. Are the spark plug wires good ? -- inspect for broken terminals and loose contacts. Test with a multimeter for close to 0 ohms. 3. Is the high voltage electronics working ? (newer systems) This can only be tested with special equipment. 4. Is the coil good ? (older systems). This can be tested with a multimeter. The input side should have low conductivity. The output side should have low conductivity (near 0 ohms). But the input should not be shorted to the output. 5. Are the wires to the distributor and inside the distributor working and tight ? Check all connections for conductivity. 6. Is there power to the coil or electronics ? check to see that they are getting power. 7. Finally is the ground strap from the block to the (-) of the battery clean, tight, and have good conductivity ? This is a common event on old cars since there is alot of rust that builds up and doesn't allow the return path from the block to the battery in order for the spark plugs to work. If the block has a ground strap to the chassis, that is okay, but does the battery (-) have a ground strap (copper wire braid) to the chassis ? Check all these and then let me know.
