Heather C asked Some advice for a trip to the Mt. Baker, WA.?
Hello, all! During the labor day weekend, I'm planning to go the Mt. Baker with friends, total 6 ppl. I'm still doing research on the web but would like to get info from the "real" experience 🙂 I'd like to get some advice for - Lodging (Cabin Rental Preferred but can't decide the location) - Activities (Now I'm reading about climbing up to the trail by car... anything else?) Your information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and helpful advice!!
And got the following answer:
For lodging, check here http://www.gonorthwest.com/washington/cascades/glacier/glacaccom.htm My experience from Mid-September 2006: After breakfast, I decided to fit in a tour of Mt Baker. (I’ll relay some of what I gleaned from researching.) Mount Baker (10,778 feet), is an ice-clad volcano in the North Cascades of Washington State about 31 miles due east of the city of Bellingham. After Mount Rainier, it is the most heavily glaciated of the Cascade volcanoes: the volume of snow and ice on Mount Baker (0.43 cubic miles) is greater than that of all the other Cascades volcanoes (except Rainier) combined. Isolated ridges of lava and hydrothermally altered rock, especially in the area of Sherman Crater, are exposed between glaciers on the upper flanks of the volcano: the lower flanks are steep and heavily vegetated. The volcano rests on a foundation of non-volcanic rocks in a region that is largely non-volcanic in origin. I hear that the best view of Mount Baker is from the Glacier Creek Road off of Highway 542. A 10-kilometer hike, taking off from Dead Horse Road (No.3907) affords closer views of Baker's north side. Mount Baker ... is one of the loftiest and most conspicuous peaks of the northern Cascade range; it is nearly as high as Mount Rainier, and like that mountain, its snow-covered pyramid has the form of a sugar-loaf. It is visible from all the water and islands ... [in Puget Sound] and from the whole southeastern part of the Gulf of Georgia, and likewise from the eastern division of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It is for this region a natural and important landmark... We meandered Prairie Road from Skagit Casino and picked up Hwy 9N toward Deming, quite a nice route in rural WA, west of the North Cascades. We got on Mount Baker Highway (Scenic Byway 542) to Maple Falls and Glacier. We passed through the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest before turning south into the Mt. Baker Wilderness Area. This relatively short 52-mile byway winds along the North Fork Nooksack River, with the last 24 miles, (Glacier to 5,140-foot Artist Point) is rugged high country. The ending 10-mile stretch is a switch-backing drive gaining 3200 feet in elevation. All along is some of the most beautiful scenery of all the North Cascades. On the way up, stunning Nooksack Falls is definitely a must see. It has an 88’ drop and is only a short distance from the highway. I read where the waters of the North Fork of the Nooksack River begin on the slopes of Mt. Shuksan. They flow through mountain valleys and into a deep rocky gorge. The river travels a narrow channel through the shadowy forests, and then surges out into the air, plummeting down to the rocks below. Notes: North Cascades Climate Steep mountains and onshore weather systems from the Pacific Ocean influence a wide range of climate conditions in the North Cascades. One of the snowiest places on earth, the westside mountains collect more snow than melts each year (forming glaciers). On the east side of the mountains, conditions are much dryer. Artist Point, WA At the end of the highway visitors view the Mount Baker in wild, rugged glory. The sight of 9127-foot Mount Shuksan reflected in the still waters of Picture Lake is one of the most photographed mountain views in the world. Taking the striking contrast of the black rock, white snow, and gleaming icy blue of glaciers, it is not hard to understand why this area was named Artist Point. There’s an easy, mile-long trail to put 10,775-foot Mt. Baker in your lap. (Words I’ve head from another) “Beautiful meadows and valleys of varied wild flowers. Lots of snow, miles and miles of snow covered mountain vistas including Mount Olympus. We felt like we were on top of the world. God’s incredible artwork.” I couldn’t have said it better. The attractions and scenery found are worthy of extra time taken out-of-the-car absorbing the atmosphere. There’s much solitude and beauty here. The views of the valleys, mountains, and trails are stunning. Unlike many byways, this road does not lead to another location or area. It’s a destination unto itself and an adventure all along the way. The weather in the great Pacific Northwest can be somewhat changeable but we had it just lovely. Sunglasses came in handy. We finally departed the miles of snow covered mountain vistas, fueled up and grabbed an ice cream.
