I assume the modulated carrier signal from the infrared transmitted beam is 36 khz. However, I'm not sure how many volts it runs on & whether or not this is a DC operated circuit because i don't want to use household current. But this is basically the same kind of project i want to duplicate, & I have a linear actuator on hand like that. I also am not sure whether or not to use arduino or a pic controller? Can anybody help?

Like any problem you start at one end ond work it towards the other. Start with what you have which in this case it the actuator. What voltage oes it operate with? Start simple and progress in small steps . Attact power to that actuator and operate it. Note how it works, what happens when you turn the power on and off. How do you make it change direction. This may sound simplistic but if you don't understand how the actuator works, then how can you program a microcontroller to operate it. Micro controllers typically operate on 5VDC, but that actuator will most likely need an different voltage to operate. This meanc that you will need interface circuitry between the micro and the actuator so that the low voltage from the micro controller can control higher voltage used by the actuator. The easiest way to do this is with a relay that uses a 5vdc coil. The contacts of the relay are used to switch power to the actuator. Wire up relays, the actuator and the power supply for the actuator. Test the relay operation by using 5 VDC To operate the relay coil and make the actuator function. If you can't make this work there is no sense on going further until you can get this simple circuit to work... When this is done you can not progress to selecting a controller, pic, atmel, chipkit,basic stamp,propeller, arduino Whatever you choose.... Your preference , but i would select either an arduino or basic stamp as these are the easiest to use for a noob. Now you progress in small steps again but using the microcontroller to operate the relays. Hook up the relay coils to an output on the microcontroller. Then use the software to programit to turn the relay on when you power upbthe controller. Once that works you reprogram the controller to add complexity a little bit at a time. Power up wait a few seconds then operate the actuator, then add more complexity to make the actuator move back and forth. Then add an input switch and make the actuator work in response to pressing an input switch.... Get your project to this point before you worry about the ir control. If you can't get to this level in your project the IR remote is meaningless.
