Older model furnaces used a 24 volt mechanical fan relay, the newer models have a DC fan relay soldered onto a solid state control board. If the problem is the fan relay it will have to be replaced. On the old mechanical type, you just replace the relay, but on the newer models with the relay soldered onto a control board you would have to replace the solid state control board to correct the problem. To confirm it is the relay and not a short in the low voltage field wiring, do the following check . On the furnace remove the low voltage wire connected to the ‘G’ terminal, this controls the fan relay in the cooling mode. This wire if color coded correctly will be a green color. If you have the older mechanical type relay, the ‘G’ terminal will be located on a terminal strip. If you have a newer furnace with a control board, the ‘G’ terminal will be located on the control board. With the ‘G’ terminal wire disconnected, if the fan still runs, then the problem has to be the relay. However, as I said above if a limit switch is open the fan circuit will be energized (this is something that normally only happens if the furnace has been running in the heat mode).
