Matthew asked What could cause my AC blower motor and outside unit to stop running at the same time?

My AC blower motor and outside unit worked fine for a long time then all of a sudden the blower motor and outside unit would never run at the same time. I was checking this out and in the process a circuit board fried out. (Right in front of me flames and all). So I changed the board and it still didn't fix the problem. I messed with the breakers and nothing worked. Then all of a sudden it was working again. I don't really know what I did to get it to work, but I just left it alone. It worked for a few months more then quit again. I have a thermostat with a cool, heat, or off setting. A temp setting with a digital reader. Then a fan on, or auto setting. Usually I am running on cool and auto or off and auto. If I ever run cool and on, then the fan will not run. If I set it to off, or heat and fan on then the fan will not run. So the fan on setting never works. There is a switch on the blower itself that has an on and auto setting which does work but only when the ac setting is set to off. So if I have the blower motor switch set to on and everything else set to off and auto, then that is the only time the fan will run. As soon as I turn the ac to cool the outside unit will turn on and the blower motor will turn off. I don't know what to do to get the outside unit and the blower motor to run at the same time. Anyone have any suggestions or know of any numbers I can call that I can talk to a professional for free?

SURPRISE! You are asking questions of professionals. I am retired with decades of HVAC and refrigeration experience. Many others answering questions here are experienced and some still working in the field. That is the good news. You gave too little information. At least we need to know the type of equipment and sometimes need make and model of air handler, condenser, and thermostat. I most would like to know the age and type. I say age because there is often little need to have a fan switch on a modern air handler/furnace at the furnace itself. That is unless there was not enough wires in the wall to the Tstat or it didn't have a fan relay. That leads me to guess you have an a/c that was added to a rather old furnace, even oil, which can be done even if the furnace was not designed to also serve as an air handler and has no control board. When they do that they add a master relay with several poles or a couple of them. The need is to shut off the furnace so it can't run in cool and switch the fan speed to high when cooling. Without knowing the equipment and age and what was done my best guess is the shorting board at the condenser took out the fan relay or the system relay whether they are on a board or separate add-on items. Since it worked then quit again; As a test I would shut off the power to the consenser at the outside disconnect, turn the thermostat to the cool setting, auto, and then go to the furnace and cut the power on and off several times to see if might kick in. What that does is cycle the relay on and off. You don't want to cycle the condenser on/off like that so that is why I said cut power to it. I suspect the contacts are burnt in the relay in the furnace. Sometimes you can get a burnt relay to make contact by cycling it a number of times. But the tsat may have a delay preventing this from working in which case r-y control voltage would need to be jumped. That is my best guess. But it is real tough without seeing how it is set up and putting a meter on it to see where the voltage is lost. Good Luck.
