I have a project I am working on with the arduino and it is necessary to have a remote sensor to measure whether a switch is connected. What I am looking for is a transmitter/receiver that is only one channel and only transmits on/off (whether or not the switch is closed). Is there any such circuit that can be built? I know I could accomplish this with a separate arduino with an Xbee transmitter but i think that is overkill.

Here is the concept. Connect a switch as follows: From Arduino +5V, through a "pull-up" resistor of value 1K to 10K, to the digital input of the Arduino. From digital input through a long wire to the switch, through switch back through a second long wire to the Arduino ground/0V common.. The switch can be located several meters from the Arduino, especially if the wires are twisted together. In some situations the switch could be much further away. This will make the digital input +5V when the switch is open, and 0V when the switch is closed. Use a program to read the digital input, determining whether the input is high or low (see second link below). In the example the program operates an LED when the switch operates, but you can adapt that do do whatever it is you want. The example is a fragment from a program. Some problems are that there will be contact bounce at the switch or electrical interference can be picked up on the wire. Usually contact bounce can be solved by re-reading the switch after a delay of say 20ms to determine if the contact is the same after it has stopped bouncing (as in the example). Both these situations can be helped by placing a small capacitor (10nF) across the digital input. It is not totally clear what you want in the question. If you want some sort of wireless connection the types that can be used without a licence are generally of a range like 10m. These are like the garage door opener types, and you need a transmitter and a receiver. Consider wireless alarms, doorbells etc as a source of these.
