I know that I need a relay that the low voltage current within the alarm clock can trigger but I don't know what type of relay is ideal for this. I've worked with contactors that trigger motors before, but never lighting. Anyone with some electrical know how think they can give me some advice?

You should be able to use one of the small ice cube relay with the right coil voltage. I am assuming that you want to turn household light bulbs. If that is the case then. Hook up the output of your alarm clock to the to the relay coil then hook up the AC neutral straight to your light.The AC hot needs to be tied to one side of the N.O contacts. On the other side of the same N.O contact run a jumper to the hot of the light. In this way the alarm clock opens and closes the power to the light acting as a switch. Hope it helps
