Greg asked Redundant Power Supply?
We are located in an area with frequent power problems. All of our servers, network switches, and our fiber modem have redundant power supplies in them. The two power sources are plugged into two separate UPS power supplies (huge rack mount ones), and these UPS power supplies are on separate circuits, on separate legs of power. We occasionally get problems with one leg of service being out, or power 'glitches' and spikes. The problem I am having is that our firewall only has one power supply. I have it plugged into one (of the many) UPS power supplies currently. Do they make a device that I can plug the firewall into, and it would have two power cords coming off of it, for a failover if one of the cords lost power? What would be even nicer is if the device also had load balancing, so half of the required power would be pulled from each circuit (that's not a necessity though, regular failover would be just fine). I could probably build something with a relay, but I'd worry about when the relay switched over, would I lose power for a split second. Anyone know of any devices that can do this? Thanks.

With the UPSes that would be difficult. Straight from the mains you could simply wire both supplies into a twin primary transformer and take the power from the secondary. However from the UPSes there is no guarantee of any phase relationship so magnetically coupling the separate supplies in this manner will not give reliable operation. I'm not aware of anything on the market that does what you want but I admit I haven't looked. It strikes me that you are asking for something most people would regard as conceptually flawed - the attitude would generally be that you need fully redundant power supplies or you don't, not a half-and-half arrangement like this. However, to do what you want I'd agree a relay is probably the best bet, and I wouldn't be overly concerned about switchover time. Mains relays are available with switching times in the 10ms region for comparatively little - under £5 here in the UK. What do you think controls switchover for off-line UPSes? Most PSUs can accommodate such a brief power outage without fuss. For example, the ATX power supply specification mandates that any ATX PSU must be able to bridge at least a 16.7ms power outage without issue. Depending on your firewall, it may or may not have a standard ATX PSU but even if it doesn't the basic idea still holds - the ability to bridge a brief power outage effectively comes "for free" as part of the standard regulation circuitry in a switch mode power supply. Update: I disagree with the previous respondent in regard electromechanical relays - in my view that is the only option. Even if you can find solid state relays with the current and voltage rating needed (and that's a fairly big if) you are going to be paying a _lot_ for them.
