STI Bullies asked Boat motors swamped by 3-4ft waves?
Hi I have to 2 motors on a 17' bass tracker. Went camping this past weekend. I did not anchor the boat properly, a storm came in anchors released boat got push onto shore and under a down tree in front of our camp site. The waves were 3-4ft coming onto shore the boat got swamped 2ft of water in the boat. I bailed out the water that night. Waited till the next morning. Started my 2009 9.9 Mercury she ran for about 200yards before I shut her down tried to start my 1994 40hp Mariner, wouldn't run. It's turning over but will not start. My 9.9 will now not start either. The boat is going into the shop next week. I just would like to know or get an idea of what kind damage I'm looking at possibly $$ wise and down time? Even what kind of damage I could have done to the motors? Thank in advance for any feedback.

I'll not guess at the repair for possible damage done to your boat by waves and tree. First, back to the boat. Electrical, steering , and fuel system. Wires should be checked, washed. Dried. Coated possibly coated with dielectric grease to prevent corrosion. Electrical switches, relays, electronics such as radios, gps, depth/fish finders should be looked at, possibly repaired/replaced. The steering system, cables, connections, fasteners, checked/re-lubed if needed. Other moving parts should be checked, swivel chairs, fish hold covers, etc., possibly cleaned/lubed, replaced? Stainless steel fixtures, other fixtures should be cleaned and polished. And wash the boat down in all nooks and crannies to be rid of dust and debris that will become visible after the stuff dries and becomes loose. The fuel tank(s), lines, fuel filter and water separator before the connector to the motor should be drained of water, checked for damage, filters replaced, before being put back in service. The motors... In addition to the ob motors exterior, the motors will have water in the power head, carburetors, under the flywheel, grease fittings, and fuel system, cylinders, piston and rings, crank shaft bearings. Ob motor fuel system must be drained. Fuel pump taken apart, inspected, cleaned, parts replaced. Carburetors must be taken apart, cleaned, jets removed, inspected, cleaned, same with inlet/shut-off valve. Carburetor level checked/restored if needed. The condition of the power head internals is the big ticket item here. Water is easy to remove. It is what the water does to the steel parts that may a non-issue or may be a spendy repair! Possible rust/corrosion of cylinders, pistons and rings, bearings. And if sunk in fresh or brackish or salt water will determine possible damage. As will the things you did to preserve internal combustion chambers. Plus the time interval between the sinking, work to preserve metal and time to the real shop type work. More than likely the motors will need a good drying out, re-lube, compression check, run with fresh gas / oil plus work mentioned above and all will be well. But I could be wrong not having been there in your experience.
