I have just recently installed a Honeywell thermostat. Replaced the old one because the fan ran all of the time and the house would never get warm. So now that I have the new thermostat, the house is getting warm but the fan only goes off for a very short period of time. I am worried that I will have yet another $390 electric bill. Any ideas what the problem may be?

Ill assume that you did purchase a correct thermostat that is for a heat pump. You probably got a universal one. Which is ok. Not all stats are the same. Now with that being said. There should be a user installer guide. This is separate from the book that came with the stat. You need to program the stat for heat pump operation. Youll need to set it up accordingly or its not going to work correctly for you. The thermostat needs to say on the box 2 Stage heat 1 stage cool. If it only say 1 stage heat and 1 stage cool you have the wrong thermostat . Going back to the 2 Stage heat and 1 stage cool. What that means is that for heating it will 1 control the heat pump and the 1 aux heat. Hence 2 stage heat. 1 stage cool would be 1 compressor which im sure is all you have. So 1 stage cool. If the electric bills have got alot higher lately and you cant figure out why, I would suspect a stuck heat sequencer. What that does is in a nut shell is it like and on off switch for the aux heat. And when they fail they generally get stuck in the ON position. Which in turn jacks up the electric bill because the aux heat is on all the time no matter if the system is calling for heat or not. And yes, even if the blower is not running the aux heat is still on. A good indication is if the blower if off for some time. And you feel the top of the furnace and it warm that means the aux heat is on. The other reason a fan may not shut off is in some systems there are two sequencers. One controls the aux heat and the other controls the fan. Commonly called the fan relay. When the fan relay fails, the blower may not shut off. And or you may have intermittent fan control issues. In your case I think as of right now you need to get the thermostat setup for heat pump. Also when you do get it set up. They are not simple hook it up and go. If you need more help with the stat put up the MN# of the stat. Ill just add this final comment. If your hose seems extra comfy since your new stat has been installed. Keep and eye on it when it calls for heat. Check the lcd display for Aux heat while its running. Ive seen a couple of these, in my professional view they bring on the aux heat way too often. In turn costing more money to the end user. Im not saying you have a bad one. But just keep an eye on it. I have had numerous discussion with honeywell regarding this issue. Just shy of speaking to nasa, I get the standard answer its working as per design. Which I tend to differ. It seems to be more of an issue with the "universal models" Why you got me. I have my suspensions, but trying to decipher the how and they why, Ill end up replacing it with a different brand as the customer did not want to pay for what we call the better model honeywell. Or I would suggest the homeowner replace it with a white rodgers branded thermostat that "not universal" Not to spook you just informing you on my take on it Hope this helps answer some questions
