cool asked pulse width modulation and relay?

Hi, I am to control a 24v dc motor using pwm. The application is to make the motor nearly like a synchronous motor - position control. Considering the friction and linkage losses the motor stops instantaniously after switching off. I am using a microcontroller to generate the pulse and a 3904 gp amp to amplify the signal to 12 volts and supply it to a relay which does the controlling of the motor. How muh effective will this method be. Is there any other better way of controlling the motor using pwm instead of using the relay ? The motor is a 24v 1A motor. Thanks.

the relay is not a good way to do this. It will be chattering all the time and will not have a long life. Use a power transistor to control the motor. 24 volts at 1 amp is not a heavy load. If you are, as you imply, fully switching it on and off, then the transistor will dissipate only a watt or less. How the transistor is connected depends on how the 25 volt supply relates to your IC supplies. If they all have a common ground, than put the power transistor between the motor negative and ground, and drive the base from whatever was driving the relay, via a 120 ohm resistor. Or use a PNP upside down with the emitter to +24, the collector to the motor +, motor - to ground. Run a 120 ohm resistor from the PNP's base to your relay driver. If you email me more details, I can provide a better circuit. PS, put a power diode across the motor, reverse biased. PPS, there may be a several amp startup surge in the motor, so that may change the design a bit.
