I would like to test a cylinder over a weekend and would like it to extend to its full stroke, then hold pressure for X minutes, then retract and hold for x minutes then repeat. I have a suitable powerpack, but i'm not that experienced in PLCs and control circuits. What is the best way to control the timers at the end of each stroke? Many thanks

You don't need to program anything. You just use switches or magnetic sensors at the end of each stroke to trigger a 556 timer with two one-shot configurations. Make it so the solenoid relays have a holding path through each other so they can't both be energizes at the same time and also cancel each other at the end of each stroke. The 555 timer can only sink about 200ma of current, to don't try to drive the solenoids directly, use smaller relays. Plenty of data/examples on the 555 timer IC and the 556 is just two timers in one DIP package. One-shot is also called monostable mode. Or use a parallel port interface (or USB to parallel adapter... about $20) on a laptop and write a short control program.
