If I have a temperature sensor operating on a 4-20mA anlogue signal connected to a PLC, and a radiator valve/actuator operating on 0-10V, how is this information relayed in the OPC server? And how is the li k achieved from the room temperature to the OPC software?

First the physical measurements (i.e. Temperature ) are converted to an analog signal such as a voltage or current. This analog signal is then passed to the input of the PLC where it is converted into a digital form by equating the intensity of the voltage or current into a numeric value. THis is done by an ADC (Analog to Digital Converter). This numeric value is then assigned to a variable (memory location) after which it becomes available to the PLC for use in its control logic. The PLC is also programmed to perform communication with other computers, controllers or PLC's. Communication between these devices is done using a communication protocol such as RS232, RS486 or MODBUS etc... Collectively these devices form a network and can exchange data between devices connected to the network. The OPC server program polls the PLC and other devices via the communications network and basically asks each device for the values stored in its memory. The programmer defined the OPC tag to look at a particular memory location of a particular device (PLC) and label it to describe its function and property ( i.e. Oil temperature). Once the OPC tags have been read from the PLC they can be passed on to other OPC clients
