i have lost many speaker by over volume. Now i got a pair of speaker box made by sharp. It has 20w(200w max) 8 inch woofer and 3 inch cone tweeter with 339 cap. I have made series rc with series with positive line( 18 ohm 5w series with bipolar 63v 470uf).does this rc network protect the speaker or not? thanks for your reply. I have made this 63v 470 bipolar using series of two 63v 1000uf (plus minus minus plus) can i use it or simply use 560uf polar one.

You've made a high pass filter. Assuming that the speaker is 8 ohms, the cut off frequency is about 13Hz. That will protect the woofer from DC (the blocking cap going to the tweeter protects it in addition to what you added). Now, adding the resistor is significantly dropping the power the amp can deliver to your speakers. If your amp is rated at (for example) 45 watts into 8 ohms, it's only going to be able to deliver about 1/3rd that (about 15w) with that resistor there. You would be much better off loosing the resistor and putting in a 560uF cap. That would give you a cutoff of about 35 Hz (which is still below what your speaker can probably produce, and give you much better DC protection. What you have will do nothing for "over current". For that, you would need to rectify the signal from the amp to establish a DC equivalent, go into a voltage divider, and then to a transistor which would fire a relay and disconnect the speaker from the amp. The value of the voltage divider would have to be derived by taking some power measurements and determining the maximum safe operating level for the speaker. If you are cranking the amp to the point of distortion, there's nothing that you can add after the amp to protect the speaker. A very distorted signal, even if the power is significantly lower than what the speaker can handle, will heat up the voice coil and damage the speaker. I've seen 500 watt speakers destroyed by a 50 watt amp that was cranked to a ridiculous level of distortion. There's a real read flag in your post, and that's where you saw your speakers have a 20W (200W max) woofer. I'm guessing that 20 watts is the continuous power rating, while the 200W is going to be some over-hyped super short burst rating (which is almost useless. If 20 watts is the RMS (average) power rating, then the peak power is 28 watts, and the peak-to-peak is 56 watts. How they get 200...not a clue. Good luck. Greetings from Austin, Tx Ken
