Let me start off by saying I have a pretty good grasp on electrical theory and circuitry. With that said, I have a device which controls relays via a USB interface. Due to an ID10T error, DC voltage was applied to this board with the polarity REVERSED. This of course blew something in the device. The device takes 12V input and as the power ventures through the board, it passes through a series of transistors (I believe the VCC is going to the "collector" side of said transistors). It also passes through a series of diodes (well it should be being blocked by them at this point). The current to the coil of the relays I believe is turned on or off by stimulating the "base" of the transistor, resulting in the voltage from the "collector" side being passed through to the "emitter" (correct me if I am wrong but that is my understanding). Okay here is why I believe (& hope) it may be the diodes. Almost all the components on this board all run together, its my understanding that a diode only allows current to flow in one direction (in this case, it keeps your voltage + from engaging the relay when the power is coming from your input, and only allows it to reach the relay coming back from the controller.) Okay with that said, after having the polarity reversed for a split second, now when i put power to the board about half of the relays close automatically. Now this tells me either A, my diodes blew and the are getting power directly from my input, or B the transistors blew and 'shorted' the collector and emitter sides together. My question is, which of these is more plausible, & what are my options. I know how to test a diode, how do i manually test a transistor? Ohm out the collector & emitter? Also, for each relay on the board (8) there is a diode and transistor for they are controlled independently. The diodes are 1N4007 & the transistors are BC637. If anyone has any testing suggestions or could narrow down which more likely blown because I would much rather replace some components than buy a new board. To charcinders & Rob T: The IC chip that communicates with USB is functioning properly. I have tested signal output and it is correct and the Tx and Rx lights are responding properly. I do not believe is it this component (it is on a separate board and just sends 5v from USB to transistor (it appears). ALSO, I have pulled a diode and tested it. Power only flows in one direction. I have also pulled 2 transistors and I have direct short between emitter & collector in one and very mild resistance in another. Relays are RAS 1215. Any other input before I search for some transistors? Also, charcinders, if you are reading this. Is this BC637 transistor the same as my C637. I have seen these, they are the same in appearance but any search I did for C637 without the B comes up null. Ok, Update. I stated originally that all relays were engaged. This is not fully the case. They seem "half-open". If i manually jump emitter and collector while board is powered, the relay will fully engage. So I guess it seems the transistors for sure. I have signal voltage to the base of the transistors.

If you communicate with this board via a USB interface, then there is more than diodes and transistors on it, it must have a microcontroller of some kind. As ICs are generally much more susceptible to damage from reversed power supplies than discrete transistors and diodes, I'd say there is a good chance that the microcontroller is damaged. But to answer your question, a transistor usually tests as if it were 2 diodes back-to-back.In the case of an NPN transistor like these, it should conduct base to emitter and base to collector, but not any other way. Of course it helps if you can take it out of circuit to do the test because other components in the circuit may affect the result. Usually if you see a transistor number starting with an A, B, C or D it is a Japanese type, and the code actually starts with 2SA, 2SD, 2SC or 2SD. That would make a C637 a 2SC637. I don't have my data books to hand to tell you whether that is an equivalent or not.
