Pretty amateur with electronics here. I am working on a project where I want to detect an AC signal. I started by modifying a circuit I found online, the concept makes sense, I think the issue is in the details. Right now I am using a bridge rectifier and then a 15V zener diode (to block any noise). After that I have some current limiting resistors and an opto-isolator that switches a higher power circuit. The problem is that I don't think I am getting a strong enough signal at the opto-isolator for it to operate. I hooked it up to a scope and when I applied the input I was getting a full wave rectified sine wave from around 0-1 volts at the opto isolator. I think I need to do some or all of the following: -Add a smoothing cap across the rectifier to smooth out the waveform a bit and allow the isolator to trigger for longer periods of time instead of just near peaks. I'm not sure how to size this capacitor though. -Use a lower voltage zener diode, maybe a 12v -Use less resistance for the current limiter I'm using a 4N27 opto-isolator, I am not savvy enough to be able to tell from the specs what input voltage is required to close the "relay side" of the IC, or how much is too much for it. I believe the diode is used to prevent random low voltage variations on the line from triggering the isolator. Also, I am only seeing a signal of around 25VAC @ 20hz, where I think this circuit was built for a 90VAC signal.

For example a Opto input is current driven, not voltage driven. so asking for the input voltage doesn't mean much. Start off by reading the datasheet for the opto. Any terms you don't understand, research. You can't use a part unless you understand it.
