I have several liquids which are feeding out of small vats into a central assembly. I need to be able to draw specific amounts of liquid from each of the vats using some form of flow meter and an opening closing mechanism. Ideally, I would have a chip connected to these control devices that would open the control gate, receive data form the flow meters, and close the control gate once a specific amount of liquid has passed through. The liquids would be of varying consistencies, and the amount release will not always be the same. No pumps or anything of that nature are required, as gravity will do all the work for pushing the liquids through the mechanism. The mechanism does not need to be incredibly accurate, as long as it can measure accurately to a few millimeters (generally pours will be between 50 and 100 ml and don't require a great deal of accuracy, but obviously the more the better). What would be a good place to start in terms of the flow control/gate mechanism? Is there a single piece I could purchase to merge these into one entity? Having an electronic input/output is required for the control. Any advice would be greatly helpful!

It might be possible to weigh the receiver to determine the amount of liquid added. This would use a load cell with the receiver hanging from it or sitting on it, assuming the receiver is a tank free to move. Similarly it may be possible to use a pressure sensor in the receiver, perhaps with a bubbler, to measure the depth. You will need to know the density of each liquid for these to work. These are typically 0.1% accuracy, so the amount added needs to be big enough to measure as part of the total in the receiver. Other depth sensors may suit. The control valve can be a solenoid in each line, but as the pressure in the lines is low it needs to be one operated by the solenoid not triggered by the solenoid and operated by differential pressure. These will be known as low pressure solenoid valves, normally open or normally closed for safety needs (power failure).. A micro-controller or PLC can control this system. It can weigh each liquid separately despite different densities, to determine the amount. It can also take account of the tare. You will need someone to program this, or learn to do it yourself. A low cost micro-controller that is easy to program is the maximite (look it up). It will need conditioning/interfaces between the sensors and the inputs (analogue inputs measure sensor outputs) and the outputs (digital outputs) need drivers to operate relays which operate the solenoids. The maximite is capable of stand alone operation, using a keyboard and VGA display as used with a PC. It can also communicate with a PC via a USB port. Others may need a separate display, which also allows settings to be changed, such as a PC. The PC is programmed separately, and might communicate via a serial port (RS232 etc.) or USB port. Flow meters come in a variety of types, from cheap ones with a paddle wheel (turbine) internally for fuel flow sensors, to a mass flow sensor, that can work with viscous fluids. It may be possible to use a single flow meter using a multi way valve with one outlet, though usually valves are 2 way (on/off) or 3 way only (a changeover valve). There are also metering pumps.
