My 91 SHO intermitentlly stops running. I can be going down the highway at 70 mph and the the whole car shuts down; all the warning lights come on, and you have to let it sit for about 10 minutes then it will start up and run fine. I have had the cam postioning sensor checked, and it is fine, a 60k has been given with the correct plugs. I don't know what the problem is, but if I could get some help on trying to figure it out, that would be great----because I love my SHO and I don't want it to die on me. Thanks!
And got the following answer:
Looks like you got some great help from some idiots. Don't buy a ford, but an imported car for 3 times the money that isn't any more reliable. Great idea!! I love to flip those broken down honda's the bird while I blow by them.... My Honda went 200k... blah blah blah... well, my fords all went 250k + with no major problems except for a 3.8. and btw, I bought 3 or 4 for less than you spent on you 10 year old honda. Ok, This is probably your problem. I don't know much about gen 1 or SHO's but GEN2 (92 on) has something I have heard called, a PCM relay module. Not the PCM (engine computer). I replaced this in one of my gen 2 taurus's. If you have one, it is a black box that all of the wires under the hood go into. The whole wiring harness on the engine. Mine was on top of the radiator. It had some bad solder joints in it. When It heated up, It would go dead. It contains relays for the engine fan (low speed and high speed), Ignition coil, Fuel pump, and some other components under the hood. It drove me nuts trying to find it. Sometimes it would cut out while driving, sometimes I would park it and it would not re-start for 10 mins. I bought one from napa for about $80. first one they gave me was defective (no engine fan). Second one worked like a charm. Bring the old one in and have them match the ford part number on it. They couldn't find it in the computer so I brought mine in and they cross-referenced the number. I don't know what they call it, but ford calls it a PCM relay module. When mine was going bad, I found that when the car wouldn't start, I could grab the wires going into it and wiggle them up and down with the key in the "on" position. After a few wiggles I would hear the box click inside and I could start the car. I did that for a few months and finally broke down and bought the new one. Initially the problem only happened while parked, eventually it got worse and started happening while driving. I hope this info helps. This problem drove me nuts for about 2 months. I forgot to mention how much I love that people suggest that old cars are not safe and that they polute the environment. My 13 year old car just passed emissions. The ratings were so low that they passed the stardards that a brand new 2007 car would have to pass. Also, my car will out drive, out handle, and out brake almost every vehicle on the road. If you properly maintain your vehicle, the emissions will be low, and the car will be safe to drive. A poorly maintained car that is only a few years old will put more polution into the environment than mine does at 13 years old. My 4 wheel disk brakes will out stop your crappy undersized factory disk / drum brakes every day of the week. With a SHO I'm sure you can attest to the excelent stopping power of the brakes. They've stopped me inches short of crushing some idiot in a lexus, range rover, or bmw hundreds of times. Go figure, Ford brakes stop you faster than BMW sports car brakes.... What do you get for all that money?
