Does anyone know of a good but reasonably priced remote controlled relay I can use as a kill switch for the fuel pump or starter?
And got the following answer:
You might consider the "No-Start" relay which is sold by Mobilistics and Emerging Enterprises. If you look at their vehicle application guide you might find the relay specific for your vehicle which would simply replace a factory relay but I would not recommend that. Thieves are aware of these remote controlled relays which replace the factory fuel pump or starter relay. There are really not many relay blade footprints and smart thieves will carry a half-dozen or more relays with various footprints of the most commonly used relays and they will just unplug the "No-Start" relay if they see it in the fuse box and then replace it with the regular factory relay. I would recommend you buy the Bosch type 20 amp GRI-B No-Start relay which has a 4-blade footprint and buy a relay socket to match it which has a hardwired pigtail so that you can wire it into any circuit you choose to kill and hide the relay and wiring however you choose. A good way to kill the starter is to cut the neutral safety switch wire which goes to the starter relay or solenoid. But I think the best thing to do is to kill the fuel pump but not by cutting the lead wire to the fuel pump relay. If thieves don't hear that fuel pump start it is too easy for them to hot wire that fuel pump relay. To kill the fuel pump it is best to cut the power supply wire somewhere near the fuel tank and then hide the No-Start relay somewhere in the trunk or somewhere in the back seat area, although that will require that you run and conceal a long hot wire to the No-Start relay from something under the dash or in the engine compartment which is only energized when the ignition switch is on. I have installed a lot of those that way and I have found some ingenious places to hide the relay where thieves cannot find it without stripping the interior. Some I have even hidden above headliners and then ran the wires under the trim. You can hide it just about anywhere because the pushbutton remote disarm transmitter which controls it has a range of about 15 feet, and another good thing about the remote disarm transmitter is that it has a low battery warning light so you are not likely to get stranded with a dead transmitter battery and unable to disarm the relay. And the best thing about the relay is that you can never forget to arm it because it has passive arming and will arm automatically about 30 seconds after you turn the ignition off and then the only way to start it again is to turn the ignition switch to the on position and then push the remote transmitter disarm button before starting the engine. Although there is a valet mode which will allow 10 starts before reverting to passive arming and if you use the valet mode you will need to remember to shut the valet mode off if you don't complete 10 shutoffs and starts. I will paste a couple links here to where you can buy the remote controlled "No-Start" relays but like I said I would not recommend buying one specific for your vehicle and then using it to replace the factory relay because a lot of smart thieves are armed with their own relays and if they see a "No-Start" relay in the fuse box they will simply unplug it and then plug in one of theirs which has the same blade footprint. If you order one, like I said, I recommend that you buy the Bosch type 20 amp GRI-B relay which has a 4-blade footprint and tell them you want a hardwired pigtail relay socket to match it. And don't forget to ask them to include the pigtail socket wiring color code, ask them which color on the pigtail is the hot wire (that is the wire you will connect to a circuit that is only energized by turning the ignition switch on) and ask them which wire color on the pigtail is the ground wire. The color of the remaining 2 wires won't matter because you will just connect one of those to one end of the circuit wire you cut and connect the other wire to the other cut end. http://www.mobilistics.com/No%20Start%20Home.html http://www.emergingent.com/vandalalert/vandal_alert_nostart.htm
