If I add a 400 kV relay to the generator leads which would already be connected to the capacitor in question, (The relay value really is irrelevant), is it theoretically possible that once the generator is activated and reaches the relay's voltage "switch" rating, the leads will charge the capacitor? I truly understand how unorthodox this methodology is, and I apologize for sounding like Dr. Frankenstein 🙂 My purpose is to provide rapid, high voltage capacitor charging without specialized equipment, and my group and I are curious as to the possibilities of a setup like this. The crux of my question has nothing to do with the type of capacitor which is being charged. Pretend the K value of its dielectric is so high that a megavolt wouldn't cause dielectric breakdown. IGNORE the capacitor, its completely irrelevant. In THEORY, could a van de graaff generator be used to charge an external capacitor, when connected correctly.
