The head gasket?? Wow. Cherokee's run hot. The normal operation temperature on the dash gauge is 210 deg. and it does not take much to get it to run even hotter ...a lot hotter. And this is when all of the cooling system components are working in top efficiency. There is an auxiliary electric fan mounted next to the engine driven fan. The electric fan comes on anytime the A/C is running and when the coolant temp exceeds about 225 deg or so. Check to make sure this fan works. With the engine running, switch on the A/C and the fan should run. Turn off the A/C and let the engine reach operating temperature. Watch the temp gauge and at some point above the 210 deg mark the electric fan should kick on. If the fan operates normally then all systems are good and you need to take the next step. If the fan doesn't run with the A/C or doesn't kick on above about 225 deg then you have some electrical/sensor issues. The easiest electrical issue is a blown fuse. In the engine bay there is an electrical distribution box, black plastic with a cover that says "fuses" (I do believe). Inside that box will be the fuses for high draw/high amp components like the A/C compressor clutch, the fuel pump and ...the electric fan. Check the fuse and make sure it is good ....pull it out, they are just like the little ones under the dash only bigger, and look at the fusible link. Obviously if it is fried then replace the fuse. Recheck using the steps above. If the fuse is good then you need to dig deeper. The first thing to check is whether the fan itself has bit the dust. Before going any further with this trouble shoot, reach in and try to spin the electric fan. *MAKE SURE THE ENGINE IS COLD OR THE BATTERY NEG CABLE DISCONNECTED BEFORE YOU DO THIS* If the fan is very difficult to spin or won't spin, then chances are it is toast. Get a new fan. If it spins freely then continue. For this you will need to connect the fan directly to the battery using some jumper wires. Find the power plug for the fan ...it's mounted on the plastic fan shroud if I'm not mistaken ...pull it apart and connect some wires from the fan to the battery. Polarity ....it is a DC motor so if you hook the wires up backwards the fan should run backwards ...if it does reverse the wires. What you want to see is the fan spins and runs at a good speed there aren't any ugly noises it makes. If the fan won't run or makes strange sounds or runs slowly then it's time for a new one. If the fan checks out we dig deeper. I don't have my Factory Service manual in front of me but there may be some electrical relay for the fan and A/C to operate together ...that relay my have cooked itself. Likewise, there is a temperature sensor for the fan to come on in response to the coolant temperature and it may have failed. If the aux fan is operating as it should, then there are more things to check. I am always amazed that folks think a radiator in a cooling system that has not had regular coolant flushes will still function like the day it was new ...14 years later. If you've gotten this far, Noel, your radiator is plugged ...maybe not completely but enough to reduce its efficiency to where it cannot handle the heat load from the engine. And no, buying "radiator flush" ...even the "heavy duty" stuff ...is *not* going to cure your problem. You need to replace the radiator. Now, in my book if you need to replace the radiator you also replace the fan clutch and strongly consider having the water pump replaced. Why? Because the labor involved in replacing a radiator is not much different than that required to change *just* the fan clutch or the water pump ...so get them all done at once. If you're doing the work, then it'll save you the headache of having to redo the job potentially three times. I know you replaced the T-stat, but swapping in a 180 deg T-stat in lieu of the stock 190 deg unit will help in keeping your temps down and give the cooling system a better chance at shedding the heat load. And if you're gonna replace the water pump, get a high volume unit ...it is an upgrade and helps keep engine temps in check.
