I have two standalone refrigerators running off of an inverter. One unit can start if the other is already running, but the simultaneous starting load of both units exceeds the inverter's capacity. While as Bill says the electronics would be somewhat complicated, if one has the money, one can get the complicated bits in commercially made assemblies that can be rather easily wired together. At fist glance one might think that one just needs to disable (refrigeration) compressor B while A is starting and vice versa, but if B is already running we don't want to stop it, so things get a little more complicated. What we need is if A is starting (drawing high current) and if B is off, then disable B until the current drops for A drops. But if B is already running do nothing, requireing that one be able to detect if the compressors are already running. One can buy off the shelf current switches that can be used to to detect if a unit is running (normal current) or if it is starting (high current), the problem is that you'd need four of them, one each for running and starting for each compressor, and at around $70 each that might be more than you want to spend (plus there will be a couple of power relays) even after spending the $300 or so, this still is not a perfect solution as the current sensing relays have a finite response time and if the compressors tried to start literally "simultaneously" the circuit might not work as desired. The advatage of the above approch is that it could be done external to the refigerators, you could have recptacels that that the totaly unmodified refrigerator would pluginto. A more complicated but more rubust solutuion might be dig into the refigerators wiring and bring out the thermostat and mtor starting leads to a low cost PLC (or "smart relay") but that would require modifiying the refrigerators and programing the PLC. I wonder how often the compressors start "simultaneously"? and how long is the high current start cycle?
