If you want to do this simply and can accept a psuedo Sine wave and don't care about frequency, you can do the conversion electro-mechanically in one of two ways.. 1. ) MG SET (Motor-Generator Set) - An electric motor spins an electric generator. The motor and generator can be any combination of DC and or AC. (DC/DC, AC/AC, DC/AC, AC/DC) 2.) Use a Vibrator and transformer. Old vacuum tube car radios used Vibrator circuits to convert 12VDC up to several hundred volts DC to operate the Vacuum tubes in the radio. This latter method is easy to do as an experiment. The operating concept is similar to that of an automotive ignition coil where a transformer can be operated by a breif pulse of DC. The Pulse of DC creates a magnetic field in the primary of the transformer. Because the DC is applied breifly the magnetic field first expands when DC is applied then contracts when the DC is removed. A Vibrator is a device that Chops up smooth DC from a battery into a series of DC pulses. (It would look like a square wave) Apply this Square wave to a transformer and you can step the voltage up or down. The neat thing here is that the output of the transformer will be AC even though pulsating DC is being applied. This is because the expanding and collapsing magnetic field in the Tranformer Primary induces a voltage in the Secondary winding. The varying magnetic field changes direction relative to the winding and so developes a voltage first in one direction as the field expands then the other as the field collapses. Even though a Square wave pulse is applied to the transfrmer the output will look more like a sine wave.
