Hi, I want to design a hardware which can be used to Turn On and Turn Off home appliance after receiving respective commands over wireless network. I would like to know if I can use a digitally controlled Relay switch to make/break the electric circuit i.e. to turn On/Off appliance. I have an Micro-controller board that receives the commands on wireless. It has an Output Digital pin. When command is Turn ON, it will raise voltage high on this Output pin so that Relay can Make the circuit. this is supply current to the Appliance Plug. If command is Turn OFF, it will raise the voltage to Low...that is Break the circuit..to discontinue power to Appliance plug. I have to use an Amplifier to increase voltage from micro-controller output pin so that sufficient voltage is provided to the Relay. (This depends upon the rating of Relay Switch). Also a transformer/coil needs to be used to convert 120 VAC to the lower voltage compatible with that of Relay Rating. Please let me know if I can use a relay switch and are there present such Relay switches? Also more suggestions are invited,..

"Also a transformer/coil needs to be used to convert 120 VAC to the lower voltage" NO, the coil of the relay has to be able to operate at a low voltage so it can be driven by the TTL signals from the micro-controller. The relay has to be large enough and with contacts rated at enough voltage and current to handle the appliance of interest. For a toaster, for example, this would have to be contacts rated at 120 volts AC and 15 amps AC. But the contact rating is entirely different and separate from the coil specs. The coil specs are what is needed to cause the relay to operate. I would guess that the coil power and voltage needed to operate the large relay that can drive a major appliance would be beyond the abilities of a micro-controller to drive. So you may need a small relay ganged that can drive the larger relay. Or a few transistor amplifier. This seem confusing. email me if I can help further/ .
